What I'm reading:
A good writer is a good reader. At least, that's what I was told. It works well for me since I can say, "I have to read this book for work." Regardless, I love to read, and the world is full of amazing books. I read for many reasons, but since I love historical fiction, I guess I love to learn. Stories that teach and let you experience a time from our history are so rich with detail and research that I am in awe of these authors. Here is what I've been reading, and why.

This was a very interesting book. The setting is Tasmania, which in itself was fascinating. The story is told through visions of a man as he is dying. It's hard to imagine how quicky a person's life can be anaylsed and summerized.
My favorite line: "He ran his hands down the roughening skin of his cheeks to join together at his chin as if in prayer of thanks, shaping the flesh into the face that he would wear through the day."

This was a great book! It was hard to read about the horrors of the war but the main character was so resilient and easy to relate to that it kept me reading. I loved the reminder that even during horrible times, the heart wants love and family over everything else. It also drove home the point that evil is a point of view in many cases. This was a remarkable story of a man's life that should serve as a testament to love, hope and faith.
This book gave me great ideas for climbing scenes, how to include love and emotion for a male audience and how to make complex characters.

Rebecca Yarros has held the top spot on Amazon for an impressive amount of time. Of course I had to read it! Dragon Academy is something I have experience in but this one is definitely the adult version. I liked this book and I can see why it is so popular, (might have to do with the surprise sex scene.)
If I can take anything from this book it is probably that sex and violence sells. But the world building and characters hold it together and I will probably read the rest of the series.

I am reading more fantasy novels as part of my commitment to learn. This novel has some great world building and characters. I got some great reminders about creatures and gods that I hadn't spent a lot of time thinking about. The sprites are so cute! This was another adult novel with graphic sex scenes and lots of profanity.
I will use this novel as reference for creatures and gods. I think the fight scenes were good too. I found some tropes too predictable but that's just a personal preference.

I have had a fascination with Africa for as long as I can remember. Facing the Congo is a "keep and re-read" book on my shelf. It will educate you about the history and reality of this place and make you appreciate everything you have. I will never complain about the mosquitos or bugs we have again.

I wouldn't have been drawn to this book, (might be the cover), but it was given to me by a friend and I gave it a try. The things I liked include: the tension between the divorced couple, the trauma of being and having an overbearing parent and the intensity and rawness of women who give up their careers to have children. It was very relatable.
